2K Games, one of many sub-brands of Take-Two Interactive, announced today Vietcong 2, the sequel to one of my favourite games of 2003, Vietcong.
While the general consensus for the original was "great gameplay, especially the multiplayer, but shame about the blocky graphics", the sequel should hopefully avoid that fate, as it sports a "brand new 3D engine". Of course, graphical standards have moved on substantially in the intervening 2 years with the likes of Far Cry, Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 raising the expectations of gamers to very high levels.
Specific details are not yet available, but close inspection of the lone-released screenshot reveals a big jump in the number of polygons used in the player model: face & hand detail is much finer, as is texture realism. Of course, the game is famed for its claustrophobic jungle environments and again, if this screenshot is representative, we're in for another sweaty, humid, gun-toting romp in the rainforest.
The birth of a sequel is testament to the hard work of Czech developers,
Pterodon, put in on the first game:
"The first Vietcong was a big success for us," said Christoph Hartmann, Senior Vice President of Publishing for 2K Games.
"Almost two years after its initial release, there are still hundreds of servers and thousands of gamers playing Vietcong all day, every day. With Vietcong 2 we intend to give hardcore fans and newcomers alike an even bigger and better experience."
Vietcong 2 promises an "all-new single campaign" (well, it would hardly be the original missions, would it!), as well as new multiplayer modes, Vietcong 2
"aims to improve on the acclaimed gameplay of the first game, while presenting a completely new experience". For me, the original VC was similar to a childhood game of Cowboys & Indians, in that liberal use of imagination allowed the in-game atmosphere to come alive and overcome the average graphics. If Pterodon can do the business this time around, I'll be singing carols with the stinging stench of napalm in the back of my throat this Christmas.
Vietcong 2 is planned for release "in late 2005" (here's hoping that doesn't really mean 2006!!)
