Valve is teaming up with Japanese developer Taito to develop a new Left 4 Dead title designed for Japanese arcades.
Left 4 Dead: Survivors was teased on
Nesica and previously had the working title Project Z. A live action trailer for Project Z featuring zombies and closing on a zombie sat at an arcade machine was launched back in February.
No further details on the collaboration have yet been announced, although the teaser image does state ‘2014 outbreak coming soon’ implying that either more information or a full release is expected by the end of the year.
This is not the first time Valve and Taito have worked together to bring a Valve title to the arcades. In 2006, Half-Life 2: Survivor made its way into the arcades with a story, battle and mission mode. The arcade cabinet featured two joysticks and floor pedals to control the game.
Reception to Half-Life 2: Survivor was generally positive giving Valve ample motive to attempt something similar with Left 4 Dead, a game that arguably lends itself to an arcade setting better than the Half-Life series.
In August, the existence of a Left 4 Dead 3 project in the works was revealed through a screenshot of a Valve change log, as reported by
Rock, Paper, Shotgun. Images of some of the Left 4 Dead 2 maps being remade in the Source 2.0 engine were also leaked earlier this year.
Another rumour which circulated in January was that Payday developer Overkill was working on a Left 4 Dead prequel, which Valve promptly denied.
