Nimblebit’s Tiny Death Star mobile game has been pulled from app stores by publisher Disney without developer Nimblebit being warned.
Speaking to Pocket Gamer, Nimblebit founder Ian Marsh said that Disney’s decision to pull the title has caught the studio off guard as the game was ’a significant source of revenue for us’.
Also talking to Pocket Gamer, a source close to Disney and Lucasfilm explained that Tiny Death Star was removed so that the companies could focus on other higher priority titles, like Star Wars Commander, a mobile title inspired by Supercell’s Clash of Clans.
The free to play Tiny Death Star was essentially a Star Wars reskin of one of Nimblebit’s first games, Tiny Tower. The app had been available on the Apple App store and Google Play for approximately 11 months before it was pulled.
Along with Tiny Death Star, the less popular digital card game Star Wars: Assault Team was also pulled, assumedly for the same reason. Star Wars: Assault Team was only released in January.
The Clash of Clans clone Star Wars Commander was launched in August and by mid September had already hit 5 million downloads. According to statistics from Disney, 52.4% of players have chosen to side with the empire.
