Sony Interactive Entertainment president and global chief executive Andrew House today has finally confirmed that the more powerful PS4 console we've all been hearing about for the last couple of months and believed to be codenamed PS4 Neo exists, although it won't be shown off at Sony's E3 2016 press conference on Tuesday.
In an interview with the Financial Times, House said that this 'high-end PS4' will target hardcore gamers and consumers with 4K television sets who are 'looking for more high-resolution content'. This is reported by the FT, so it's not clear what form this high resolution content might take, although you might assume streaming service like Netflix and maybe even gaming, if only tentatively.
Explaining the decision not to show their new console at E3, House said, 'we want to ensure we have a full range of the best experiences on the new system that we can showcase in their entirety,' although if I were forced to speculate I'd suggest they also want to show off the PlayStation VR without confusing people as to the requirements. Keeping the focus on the PS4 and the VR headset without introducing another model of PlayStation to the table seems the easiest way to convey a message.
'All games will support the standard PS4 and we anticipate all or a very large majority of games will also support the high-end PS4,' said House.
The PlayStation Neo has been widely reported since March's Game Developer Conference in San Francisco. Journalists overheard developers discussing the codename for the new console, before follow-up reports revealed 4K support, upgraded specs and the news it'd probably be pushed out before the PSVR's October launch.
Expect to see more of it at Gamescom in August.
