Firaxis and strategy game luminary Sid Meier have announced their newest upcoming project, Sid Meier’s Starships.
The spaceship themed strategy game puts players in command of a fleet of vessels as they travel across the galaxy and grow their own galactic federation. Talking to
Eurogamer, Meier confirms that the game drops players into the role of admiral of the federation and that the title exists in the same universe as Civilization: Beyond Earth.
Gameplay is split between a galaxy layer where you direct your fleet and tactical missions which is more about commanding individual ships in battles. As well as being part of the Beyond Earth world, the game will also have cross-connectivity with it too, although details on this have yet to be announced.
Like Meier’s much loved Civilization series, Starships will have various win states allowing you to claim victory by either wiping out all other opponents, a ‘wonders’ victory for focusing on great works, a science victory and a population victory, granted if you control at least half of the galaxy.
Sid Meier’s Starships is being developed for PC, Mac and iPad and is due to be released early this year.
The announcement of Starships means this is starting to shape up to be tactical space fleet game week with Battlefleet Gothic: Armada, a similar sounding title based on a Games Workshop tabletop game set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, being announced over the weekend.
