Rockstar Games has been awarded a Bafta fellowship for its 'outstanding contribution' to the video games industry.
The award will be formally presented on March 12 at the British Academy Games Awards. A statement from Bafta recognised Rockstar Games as being at the 'forefront of the gaming industry for over a decade' thanks to its work on the Grand Theft Auto series along with Red Dead Redemption, Bully and Manhunt.
The award will be accepted by founders Dan and Sam Houser, Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies and Grand Theft Auto art director Aaron Garbut. Sam Houser described the award as 'incredibly humbling'.
'We have long believed in the potential for video games to become a new form of cultural expression and worked to show that in our games,' said Houser. 'This honour reflects the creative vision and dedication of a huge number of people over many years, and we look forward to accepting the Fellowship on their behalf.'
The Bafta Fellowship has previously been won by god-game pioneer Peter Molyneux, Valve head honcho Gabe Newell, Mario designer Shigeru Miyamoto and Sim City creator Will Wright.
Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 5 has also been nominated for several categories in the British Academy Awards including game innovation and best game. The title broke records by raking in $1bn within its first three days of release, making it the fastest selling entertainment product in history.
