The developers of Playstation 4 shooter Resogun and early-80s arcade classic Defender are teaming up to work on a new game.
Eugene Jarvis, creator of Defender as well as Smash TV, Blaster, Narc and Robotron, is teaming up with Icelandic studio Housemarque to work on something inspired by old-school arcade classics. Resogun is widely considered as something of a modern reimagining of Defender.
Jarvis has not collaborated with any other developers since his time with Midway Games in the mid-90s. The team-up was announced during a Q&A panel between the developer, Resogun lead developer Harry Krueger and chief research officer of F-Secure Mikko Hyppönen.
'When I saw Resogun I couldn’t believe how these Housemarque guys took Defender to a new level,' said Jarvis. 'I wondered what would happen if we teamed up? Mash up old school arcade with mad voxel tech and crazed nouveau Helsinki gamers.'
Outside of Resogun, Housemarque is probably best known for Super Stardust. Resogun was one of the titles available for the Playstation 4 during its November 2014 launch and was met with an overwhelmingly positive critical reception.
Defender first appeared in arcades in 1981 and was Jarvis's first video game project. Prior to this, he had worked as a pinball programmer.
