Developer Heavy Spectrum has confirmed that it will be including a complete version of the original game with its Shadow of the Beast reboot for Sony's PlayStation 4, with some concessions for the modern gamer.
Developed by Reflections and published by Psygnosis in 1989 for the Commodore Amiga, side-scrolling fantasy platformer Shadow of the Beast is one of the most fondly-remembered titles of its era thanks to its impressive graphics and soundtrack - though the game's difficulty left many unable to progress further than the first boss. While its sequels, released in 1990 and 1992, would include adjustable difficulty, it is the original that most remember - and Heavy Spectrum is keen to win these nostalgists over to its reboot of the title.
The company has confirmed that the rebooted Shadow of the Beast for the PS4 is to include the complete original game as an unlockable bonus, based on the original Amiga version rather than any of its ports - which ranged from the 8-bit ZX Spectrum to consoles including the Sega Mega Drive and Atari Lynx. It will include a number of optional changes to please the modern gamer, however, including an option to enable infinite lives to make up for the punishing difficulty.
The reboot will also include the original soundtrack, composed by David Whittaker, as an unlockable replacement for use during the rebooted gameplay, Heavy Spectrum's Matt Birch
