Sony is preparing to announce a premium version of the PlayStation Network service at E3 2010, according to rumours and sources from within Sony.
Sony has been rumoured to be
contemplating PSN subscriptions for some time, but has often refuted the idea and promised that
PSN will remain free.
Now though, Sony is working on a new PSN service for subscribers only, according to
VG247.
The new premium PSN service is said to be priced at around £50 GBP per year and will include new features, but apparently won't replace the free PSN service that's already available. Subscribers will get one free PSN game every month from a choice of two to four.
"
If you work it out, PSN games cost an average of £6-9 each, so over a year you're basically going to be breaking even," said the anonymous source.
The source also promised that a new music streaming service similar to Spotify will be coming to PSN on June 15th and that it'll run in the background and be able to play music over the top of games.
Rumours that Sony is working on support for cross-game voice chat as a paid feature have been rubbished though, with the source saying that that's "
100 percent...not the case."
Multiplayer gaming, Home and other currently free features on PSN are said to be unaffected by the new plans.
