Sony has released a video revealing the final specifications of its PlayStation VR virtual reality headset, formerly known as Project Morpheus.
First unveiled
back in March 2014, Project Morpheus is Sony's answer to the popularity of the Oculus Rift. Designed for use with the company's PlayStation 4 console, Sony is putting considerable weight behind the push into VR gaming: it has spent a small fortune setting up a
dedicated software studio to support the device, has
given it official PlayStation branding, and has even
acquired a time-of-flight tracking specialist to improve the experience.
What it hasn't done, though, is discuss technical specifications - until now. In a recently-released official video, Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation VR will launch with a 5.7" organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display sat behind its lenses, offering a 1920x1080 resolution RGB image with under 18 milliseconds of latency. The lenses, meanwhile, warp the image to offer a 100 degree field-of-vision, and an integrated accelerometer, gyroscope, and nine LEDs provide positional tracking.
The headset connects to the console via HDMI and USB, but the company has also revealed an extra feature: the video will be split and output to a connected monitor or TV as well as the headset's on-board display, allowing others in the room to see what the player sees. Sadly, a launch date and pricing were not included in the minute-long promo.
