Sony has confirmed plans to bring PlayStation Remote Play functionality to PCs, following rival Microsoft's introduction of Xbox One game streaming in Windows 10.
Sony introduced Remote Play with its PlayStation Portable console, giving the device the ability to link up with a PlayStation 3 for streaming of selected titles. The launch of the more powerful Vita hand-held console improved Remote Play considerably, and it was only natural that the PlayStation 4 would include the option - boosted by a decision to insist on Remote Play functionality for all games that don't require controller-specific features such as use of the PlayStation Camera, a shift from the PS3's position of leaving the decision up to individual game developers.
Microsoft's Xbox One, however, upped the stakes with the announcement that it would support streaming games to any Windows 10 device - including desktops, laptops, and tablets. With more households having a Windows-based PC than a Vita that put Microsoft on top, which may go some way to explaining why Sony has decided to bring PlayStation Remote Play functionality to the platform as well.
'
Some people asked if we plan to provide Remote Play function to PC,' Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida announced on
Twitter early this morning, '
and yes, we are indeed working on an official application for PC/Mac.' The announcement comes mere days after the
announcement of a third-party Remote Play PC application, priced at £6.50, from developer Twisted.
No release date has been provided for the official Remote Play port, nor has Sony confirmed whether official drivers will be provided for using the console's DualShock 4 controller wirelessly in native games will be included.
