Sony has revealed the planned range of small, 'snackable' games on the PSPgo - dubbed 'minis' - will not be allowed to feature wireless multiplayer, downloadable content or software updates.
According to Sony, who revealed the change to
Gamasutra at GDC Austin, the feature is being culled in order to speed up the rate at which games can be approved for the online store.
"
When you look at it from a testing perspective, you have to do more QA. [Allowing those features] would defeat the purpose of having a dedicated service for smaller content. It increases the barriers," Sony's Justin Cooney.
"
From our perspective, if we're going to reduce the time it takes to get through our internal process, it helps that we don't have to check the multiplayer features."
The change is notable for differing from Apple's own system, which does allow wireless multiplayer on the iPod Touch and iPhone, but Sony doesn't think it will stop iPhone developers from moving to the PSPgo - a key part of the plan, we're guessing.
PSPgo Minis were announced at GamesCom earlier this year and are basically small, download-only games similar to those you might see on the AppStore. As well as having no wireless multiplayer, the games are also limited to a 100MB in size. 15 titles are going to be available when the PSPgo launches on October 1st for £215 - though whether the PSPgo will actually be on sale remains to be seen, as some
retailers are boycotting the platform.
