World of Tanks developer, Wargaming, is taking a clone of its tank-based MMO to court.

Project Tank, created by Chinese companies Changyou.com and Beijing Gamease Age Digital Technology is described by Wargaming as an 'unoriginal and disturbingly similar game directly based on the World of Tanks'.

Specifically, Wargaming believes Project Tank violates one of its multiplayer matchmaking patents, but it also highlights other similarities between the two titles. The complaint against the Chinese cloners reported by Polygon points out that Project Tank has copied the plot, theme, dialogue, mood, setting, pace, character and specific features and artwork.

It even copies historical inaccuracies sported by World of Tanks and by the fact that Project Tank has copied tanks that didn't exist in real life and were created by Wargaming.

Changyou has stood up for itself and contested the charges and argues that the graphics used are simply the company's efforts to reconstruct second world war battle scenes.

'Continuously sabotaged by Wargaming, Project Tank and Gamebox have never intended to pose a threat or compete at any platform with World of Tanks,' reads a statement from Changyou on the Gamebox site. 'We feel truly shocked and bullied by Wargaming, a giant company of the gaming industry who is apparently threatened by a closed beta phase browser game aiming to provide a cheaper, fairer and more accessible war game to players around the world.'

Released in April 2011, the free-to-play World of Tanks hit the 40 million user mark back in October 2012. Wargaming is now currently working on two follow-ups to the successful tank-based online game, World of Warships and World of Warplanes.
