Valve has confirmed plans to demonstrate a 'previously-unannounced SteamVR hardware system' at the upcoming Game Developers Conference 2015, alongside its still-not-finished-yet Steam Controller and new Steam Machine console-PC-hybrids.
While best known as the creator of the iconic Half-Life franchise and its subsequent sideways shuffle into publishing and digital distribution, Valve has been dipping its toes into the hardware market for a while. It has previously released
prototype Steam Machine hardware, running its Linux-variant
SteamOS software platform, and has been working on a controller designed to offer a convenient interface for sofa-bound gamers to play games more typically associated with a keyboard and mouse - which
has gone through several redesigns. None of these have, however, resulted in any shipping products, and neither has its
planned biofeedback peripheral nor its experiments into virtual reality.
The latter, however, could be set to change. After showing off prototype virtual reality hardware at its Steam Developer Day
back in January last year, Valve could finally be ready to bring a product to market. '
Steam is bringing the best games and user-generated content to exciting new destinations,' an
announcement from the company reads. '
At GDC 2015, we'll be giving demos of the refined Steam Controller, new living room devices, and a previously-unannounced SteamVR hardware system,' it continues - the latter suggesting the device to be unveiled is a considerable evolution from its previous efforts.
'
With the introduction of SteamVR hardware,' the company's announcement continues, '
Valve is actively seeking VR content creators,' confirming that Valve is planning on going head-to-head with Facebook-owned Oculus VR to launch hopefully-affordable virtual reality hardware for consumers - and that it is hoping to get a raft of content ready in advance.
Valve has yet to release any technical details of SteamVR or discuss its pricing or availability, with more information expected to be revealed at the GDC event early next month.
