Valve has given its Steam digital distribution platform a major overhaul, offering a new store-front as part of what it describes as the 'Discovery Update'.
Launched to the public late last night, the Steam Discovery Update is Valve's response to the impressive growth of the platform that has seen 1,300 new titles added in the last nine months and its number of active users break the 100 million barrier. The biggest change comes in a new Home page, which does away with the pre-set listings of old in favour of customised offerings based on a user's previous purchases, recent playtime and any recommendations made by friends.
The Search functionality has also been improved with the addition of what Valve claims are '
extremely detailed filters' that allow users to more easily find software that matches their requirements. This also extends to a new Curators option, designed to allow users to build themed lists of titles that can be viewed by social networking-style followers.
'
We have made great efforts to increase the number of titles we can publish on Steam, which means more choices for customers,' claimed Valve's Alden Kroll during the announcement. '
This update introduces multiple features and functionality to help customers explore Steam’s growing catalogue and find the games they are most interested in playing.'
Valve's announcement of the update can be found
here, while the new features should be active for all platforms on the next client restart.
