Ubisoft has announced the impending launch of a new game for Windows, Grow Home, described by the company as an 'experiential vertical adventure' born from an internal experiment.
A distinct change of pace from the company's recent releases, Grow Home puts the player in control of the Botanical Utility Droid (BUD) and gives them the task of searching an open-world environment for new plant forms. Accessing new plants requires growing a giant towering tree dubbed the Star Plant, which BUD can climb to reach new areas.
'
Whether it’s BUD’s charming, procedurally generated animation, the awesome structure of the Star Plant players create or the beautiful landscapes, there is a peaceful, innocent vibe about Grow Home that makes the game utterly unique,' claimed Pete Young, producer at Ubisoft studio Reflections. The game started, he has explained in a
blog post regarding the launch, as an internal experiment within Reflections which caught the eye of upper management and has been developed into a fully-fledged public release.
While the company claims the game is best experienced with a joypad controller, which gives the player independent control of each of BUD's hands, it is to launch as a Windows exclusive rather than a cross-platform console title. '
We wanted to challenge how we make games at Ubisoft Reflections,' Young claimed of the project. '
We’ve got a track record of developing massive AAA games and a strong technical heritage, but we’re also a lot more than that.'
The biggest selling point of the title is likely to be the procedural animation system used for BUD. Rather than pre-calculated animation sequences, BUD - whose simplified body features gaps where the joints would usually be to make the animation system easier to handle - will, the company has promised, be able to move in any manner the player sees fit in order to accomplish his goal of reoxygenating his planet.
Grow Home is to launch for Windows PCs on the 4th of February. More information is available on the
official website.
