Publisher and developer Ubisoft has announced that it plans to offer full cross-platform multiplayer support in its upcoming virtual reality titles, including on console devices.
In an update to its Eagle Flight package, which puts the player into the body of a bird of prey flying above a post-apocalyptic abandoned Paris, Ubisoft has unlocked full cross-platform multiplayer support across Windows players with Oculus Rift and HTC Vive headsets and PlayStation 4 players using Sony's PlayStation VR hardware. While that's welcome enough, the company has also pledged launch-day cross-platform support on its other '
multiplayer VR experiences' as and when they are released to the public.
'
Making our VR titles cross-platform has been a goal of ours from the start and we’re happy to announce that Eagle Flight, Werewolves Within, and Star Trek: Bridge Crew will be playable cross-platform on PSVR, Oculus Rift, and HTC Vive,' said David Votypka, senior creative director at Ubisoft subsidiary Red Storm, in the
announcement. '
Our games feature a strong multiplayer experiences [sic], so letting friends play together regardless of which headset they own will enhance the social nature of our games and let them be played the way we envisioned.'
Eagle Flight is cross-platform enabled now on PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift, with the HTC Vive version due to be released on December 20th. Werewolves Within is due to launch on December 6th across all three platforms, while Star Trek: Bridge Crew isn't scheduled for release until March 14th.
