Fresh from bringing System Shock 2 to gamers of a new generation, Good Old Games (GOG) has announced the re-release of the original ground-breaking sci-fi epic System Shock in a new Enhanced Edition.

GOG had a hand in the re-release of System Shock 2 back in February 2013 following one gamer's crusade to rescue the rights to the franchise. While successful, the deal affected only the sequel with the - in many ways more-loved - original still only accessible via second-hand markets and inappropriately-named 'abandonware' sites.

Now, though, the company has been able to launch the original game, and it's doing so in two flavours: the original Enhanced Version with voiceovers, known to GOG as System Shock Classic, and a revised version dubbed System Shock Enhanced Edition. The latter, a sub-100MB patch to the original game, brings support for 'high' resolution play up to 1,024x768 and a native 854x480 widescreen mode for modern monitors. Gameplay tweaks include a toggleable mouselook mode, improved inventory and item management, remappable controls, and numerous bug-fixes.

The game is currently priced at $9.99 with a 20% launch discount, increased to 40% for anyone who has already purchased System Shock 2 through GOG. The Enhanced Edition also includes bundled extras: copies of the manual in English, French, and German, a hint-book, maps, a strategy guide, a quick-start guide for the Enhanced Edition changes, the soundtrack in MIDI, FLAC and MP3 formats, the original TV advert, and five artwork files.

More information is available from the official product page, while a video of the new improvements is reproduced below.
