At an exclusive pirate-themed party hosted at GDC 2010 Lucasarts has announced that a special edition remake of
The Secret of Monkey Island 2: Lechuck's Revenge is in the works and will be released this Summer.
As with
The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition,
Monkey Island 2's remake will be a multi-platform affair, with PC, XBLA, PSN and iPhone versions all announced.
Monkey Island 2: SE will make use of most of the same style too, updating the art style and including complete voiceovers.
But that's not all. In response to fan feedback Lucasarts has promised that
Monkey Island 2: SE will also include some new features and extras that will appeal to long time fans of the series. There'll be new,
never-before-seen art from Peter Chan and Steve Purcell, as well as brand new developer commentary.
Other changes include a new control system for moving Guybrush around, which Lucasart's Craig Derrick reckons will help players feel more connected to him, and re-imagined character designs - Lucasarts is citing fan dislike for Guybrush's hair as the reason for that. All we can say is that they'd better leave his non-beard alone...
The Secret of Monkey Island series is often considered a stand-out classic in the adventure game genre, appearing often on 'Best Game Ever' lists - especially those
written by Joe. The second game in the series follows hapless pirate Guybrush Threepwood as he tries to escape the zombie pirate Lechuck and find a legendary treasure called Big Whoop. It's hilarious stuff.
Lucasarts announced at the same event that the remastered version of the first game in the series will also be heading to Mac and PSN in the future, so there really is no reason not to play it.
