Indie fencing game Nidhogg is getting a sequel, complete with a graphical overhaul owing more to the 16-bit era than the original's 8-bit aesthetic.
The
well-regarded Nidhogg made it into our lists of both
the top five indie local multiplayer games and the
ten best melee combat games, thanks largely to its relative simplicity. Owing more to rock-paper-scissors than real-world fencing, the game pits monochromatic pixelated players against each other in a swordfight to the death. Unsurprisingly, its sequel does largely the same - but with a significantly different aesthetic thanks to full-colour, textured graphics which shift the game from the 80s to the 90s.
Nidhogg 2, its developers Messhoff have promised, will include more than just a graphical overhaul. The game will now include axes, arrows, and an array of other weapons no longer limited to fencing swords. The sequel will also include both single-player and multiplayer modes, with the latter including the traditional local multiplayer and online multiplayer with tournament support. Ten or more levels will be included with the game, while those lacking friends interested in some ultra-violence can play against computer-controlled opponents with the promise of '
occasional special challenge rounds.' The game will also include an all-new soundtrack with music by Mux Mool, Dose One, Daedelus and others.
In short, the sequel will include '
the same fast-paced hilarious stabby action you’re use to from the first Nidhogg, with more weapons, more music, more levels… and MORE FUN,' the developers promise. More information on Nidhogg 2, which is scheduled for release in 2017, can be found on the
official website, while a teaser trailer is embedded below.
