Intel's chief executive officer, Brian Krzanich, has announced that he is to swap battling in the boardroom for a more visceral experience: competing in a charity League of Legends match for the Cybersmile Foundation.
While Intel has its own Extreme Masters eSports franchise, it's unheard of for anyone at an executive level to get involved beyond signing cheques, posing for photos, and occasionally sitting in the crowd. Krzanich, though, is looking to get his hands dirty in the name of a good cause: raising money for the CyberSmile Foundation, which aims to provide support to victims of cyberbullying. 'I’m a big fan of eSports gaming and after attending Intel Extreme Masters last year I wanted to be in on the action,' Brian Krzanich, Intel CEO said. It’s exciting to get to play a match at such a large event as IEM and to be able to game for good to raise money for The Cybersmile Foundation.'
The event, organised by ESL, will see Krzanich join nine other celebrity gamers for an All Random All Mid (ARAM) League of Legends match, hosted live in front of an audience of 7,500. The more points scored and in-game objectives completed by Krzanich and his teammates, the more money the CyberSmile Foundation gets - and Krzanich has been preparing with training from an ESL-provided coach.
'It’s brave of a CEO of any company to go on stage and be willing to showcase his skills to a very demanding audience of over a hundred thousand people,' claimed Michal Blicharz, vice president of pro gaming at ESL. 'I have never seen anything like this in my ten year history with eSports.'
Krzanich's match is due to take place during the Intel Extreme Masters San Jose event, scheduled as the third match of the day on the 21st of November and due to be live-streamed on ESL's official Twitch account.
