Guild Wars 2 is entering the eSports business with its first world championships being held this December.
The prize pool for the event is $50,000 and the event will be held in Beijing, China. In order to qualify however, teams need to win a couple of other events first.
The road to the championships starts with the Tournament of Glory on October 11 and 12 with the winning teams then qualifying for an invitation to the World Tournament Series Invitational on October 25 and 26.
The winners of the World Tournament Series Invitational will then be flown out to China by Arenanet for the main world championship event.
Entrants to the tournament must be over 18 and signups are now open.
The original Guild Wars had a highly competitive PvP scene for which Arenanet also organised tournaments with its last one in 2006 offering a prize pool of $100,000.
For the rest of this week, Arenanet is running a promotion on Guild Wars 2 and is making it available to download and play for free. Ordinarily, the game requires the purchase of the client software before playing.
Guild Wars 2 has been live now for just over two years, releasing in August 2012. It received critical acclaim for its more streamlined approach to traditional MMO quest fetching gameplay and has sold more than 3.5 million copies.
