GameStop pulls PC copies of Deus Ex from shelves

Leading US retail chain GameStop is reportedly pulling all PC copies of Deus Ex: Human Revolution (regular edition) from shelves over an ongoing dispute with publisher Square Enix.

The dispute relates to coupons for cloud-gaming platform Onlive, which were included in the box with US copies of the game.

Yesterday reports arose that GameStop had informed staff to open copies of the game, even if sealed, and remove the coupons from the box before returning them to shelves. GameStop reassured customers that, even though seals were broken, the copies would still be brand new and damaged copies could be exchanged with a receipt.

'We prefer not to promote our competitors and their competing offerings and services in our stores,' said a GameStop spokesperson yesterday. 'Unfortunately, the coupon was packed without our prior knowledge.'

Now, according to an internal memo leaked to Giant Bomb, GameStop has reached an agreement with Square Enix to remove all PC copies of the game from shelves.

'GameStop was not made aware of [the inclusion of coupons] and Square Enix respects the right of GameStop to have final say over the contents of products it sells and to adjust them where they see fit in accordance with their policies' said an accompanying statement from Square Enix.
