Four percent of gamers play for 50 hours a week

A new batch of statistics from research firm The NPD Group claims that almost 4 percent of gamers within the US play games for around 50 hours per week.

The NPD Group is also responsible for collating hardware and software sales in the US and has categorised the 48+ hours a week gamer demographic as "extreme gamers", according to GI.biz.

The research also reveals that players aged 2 years and up average around 13 hours per week, an increased from 12.3 hours in 2009's survery.

Breaking those figures down, the amount of time spent playing on consoles was up by 9 percent, PC by 6 percent and portable games down by 16 percent.

The average age of gamers has increased too, from 31 to 32, pushing the NPD group to the conclusion that current gamers tend to maintain their hobby as they get older.

Other demographics of note were 'Avid PC Gamers' and 'Offline-only PC Gamers', who make up 11 percent and 8 percent of the total US population respectively. In both groups the average age was older than most other groups, jumping from 31 years old to 42.
