Following its removal from Steam due to serious bugs, Warner Bros. has issued the first in a string of planned patches for Batman: Arkham Knight in an attempt to appease its customers.
The latest in the Batman: Arkham franchise which began with Batman: Arkham Asylum, Batman: Arkham Knight was developed by Rocksteady for Warner Bros. with a clear focus on current-generation consoles - a focus so clear, in fact, that the responsibility for the Windows port of the game fell to a small company with little experience in such projects. Somewhat predictably, things didn't go well: in a flood of one-star reviews complaining about everything from crashes to major performance issues, the game was
pulled from Steam with promises that patches would be released in due course, the first of which is now live.
'
Rocksteady is leading our team of developers and partners as we work on the PC performance issues that players have been encountering,' the company claimed in a
statement released this weekend alongside the patch. '
The work is significant and while we are making good progress on improving performance, it will take some time to ensure that we get the right fixes in place.'
Described as an '
interim patch,' the update available now fixes a crash which restarts systems when the game is exited, a bug which disabled both rain effects and ambient occlusion to the detriment of graphical quality, a Steam bug which caused the game to constantly re-download its data, and a crash when disabling motion blur through direct editing of the BmSystemSettings.ini configuration file.
Sadly, the real issues have yet to be addressed, although Rocksteady has said it is '
dedicating its resources to improve the experience for our loyal fans.' Fixes promised for future patch releases include a way to disable the 30 frames per second (FPS) rendering limit in the graphics settings menu without manually editing the configuration file, a fix for the game's tendency to only load low-resolution textures, fixes for the performance of the game, additional options for tweaking the graphical fidelity including the ability to disable motion blur without editing the config file, improvements to the game's memory usage, bug fixes for Nvidia' SLI, and support for AMD's CrossFire.
No date has been given for the release of the next patch in the series.
