Bethesda has released a trailer for Fallout 4, the seventh game in the long-running post-apocalyptic role-playing franchise and the third to be published by the Elder Scrolls creator.
Launched in 1997 by Black Isle Studios, Fallout was inspired by director Brian Fargo's 1987 classic Wasteland and gained a cult following which led to a follow-up set eighty years after the first. Plans for a third title, codenamed Van Buren, fell apart with the closure of Black Isle, although two spin-off games - 2001's Fallout Tactics and 2004's Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel - were released before the franchise was acquired by Bethesda, best known for its Elder Scrolls series of fantasy RPGs.
Under Bethesda, Fallout was rebooted and relaunched as a first-person shooter, albeit inheriting the setting, lore, and selected role-playing elements of the original. 2010's Fallout: New Vegas, developed by Obsidian Entertainment and featuring many of the developers from Black Isle Studios, was the last time the franchise was refreshed, acting as a stand-alone content pack using the same engine but boasting an entirely new plotline, items and characters.
Now, Bethesda has officially announced Fallout 4 with a teaser trailer featuring the iconic voice of Ron Perlman and the music of the Ink Spots. Launching on Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, the timing of the announcement, the setting of Boston, plus a voice-over from the usually silent player-character seemingly confirms parts of a
year-old Reddit post from Sandra Reed, who claimed to be a disgruntled former Bethesda employee who had played the game in-development. '
BGS [Bethesda Games Studio] has a "Roadmap" already planned out for Fallout 4 and a spinoff. June 2015 - Fallout 4 reveal at E3, trailer only,' Reed wrote. '
July 2015 - First gameplay trailers. August 2015 - More information. October 2015 - PS4/Xbox One/PC release.'
Reed also claimed that last-generation console version for the PS3 and Xbox 360 would follow in December this year, something Bethesda has yet to confirm. Reed also claimed that five downloadable content packs are in development for release one a month from November to April skipping February, while a spin-off developed by Behaviour Interactive is claimed to be revealed in June 2016 and launched in October 2016 for Windows, PS4 and Xbox One.
While the bulk of Reed's comments are still not verifiable, the trailer - reproduced below - is at least on-schedule and confirms several details of the game and its setting. Bethesda has not commented on Reed's claims.
