Epic Games has released the Showdown virtual reality demo, allowing those lucky few with early-release VR headsets to try the 'cinematic VR experience' out in in the comfort of their own home.
Virtual reality is the next major battleground for game engine makers, and it's no surprise to find Epic Games eager to show off what its latest Unreal 4 engine can do when paired with compatible VR headsets. The company visited the major conventions this year - Oculus Connect, GDC, and Siggraph - with Showdown, an Unreal Engine 4-powered '
cinematic VR experience' demo designed to give developers inspiration and consumers a taste of the future. Designed by a five-man team and optimised to run at 90 frames per second on a single Nvidia GTX 980 GPU, the demo proved popular - and now it's available to download.
Sadly for gamers eager to give the demo a run-through, Epic isn't concentrating on consumers. That's unsurprising, given that none of the supported VR headsets - the Oculus DK2 and up, Sony PlayStation Morpheus and HTC Vive SteamVR - have enjoyed their commercial release yet. Instead, the company has released the demo for developers - but, as getting started with Unreal Engine is free, all interested parties can play the part. With the Unreal Engine 4 software development kit installed, the demo is available to download via the Learn tab and includes the entire content library used in its creation.
