Turn based strategy series Civilization is heading to the Asian market with a planned MMO exclusive to the region.
Publisher Take Two Interactive announced that series developer Firaxis will work with Korea-based XLGames to create the game which currently has the working title of Civilization Online. It will be online only and is being built from the ground up specifically to appeal to the Asian market.
The project will be headed by XLGames chief executive Jake Song, who had an core role in the development of Lineage, a popular Korean MMO that has attracted approximately 43 million players since its 1998 release. Song will lead a team of approximately 100 working on the game out of the South Korean studio.
'Over the last four years, we have been focused on creating an ambitious portfolio of online and social games with some of the most revered companies in Asia,' said Take-Two Asia president Hubert Larenaudie. Take Two and its subsidiary 2K Games have also previously worked with Tencent, Gree and CyberAgent in the region.
'Civilization Online is an example of how 2K can leverage its successful franchises beyond sports, to create entirely new experiences in genres that resonate with customers in this region,' added 2K chief operating officer David Ismailer.
Earlier this week, Take Two launched NBA 2K Online in Asia, an online basketball title that utilises a free-to-play model and is available through Tencent's games portal in China. The game merges traditional basketball gameplay with RPG elements including character progression and quests.
