Iconic classic video game character Pac-man is part of the fighter roster for the new upcoming Smash Bros. for the Wii U.
Certain attacks will see Pac-man transform from his newer 3D form into his retro 2D form. Other elements from the Pac-man game will be involved in his move-set including the ability to spit pellets and use fruit-based attacks.
The rights to Pac-man are currently still held by Namco, the developer of the original arcade game released in 1980. Pac-man joins Smash Bros. series regulars including Nintendo’s roster of first-party characters alongside Sonic the Hedgehog and other new addition Megaman.
Detailed at this year’s E3, Super Smash Bros for the Wii U and 3DS will feature the ability to make custom fighters from Mii characters and will also be compatible with the recently announce amiibo figurine system, Nintendo’s attempt to create a Skylander-esque game mechanic.
Smash Bros. is expected to launch in Japan in September, North America in October and the rest of the world at some point during Q4 of this year. Some industry insiders expect the new Smash Bros. title to give the Wii U a decent chance at an increased install base. In a recent interview, Ubisoft chief executive Yves Guillemot suggested that Smash Bros. could be the tipping point for the Wii U and the encouragement that Nintendo fans need to buy into the system.
During Nintendo’s E3 conference, Super Smash Bros. was presented alongside a new Zelda title which features an open world style of play, a new Kirby game, Yoshi’s Woolly World featuring a knitted version of Mario’s green dinosaur and Mario Maker, a tool-set to let players build their own classic Mario levels.
