Japanese outlet Nikkei have reported that Nintendo will cease manufacturing their Wii U console at the end of this year.

Less successful than it's predecessor, but still delivering several solid hits, the Wii U never quite found its feet despite successes like Splatoon, Bayonetta 2 and Mario Kart 8. Unfortunately, third party support for the console has long since dried up and even the official magazines set up to cover the Wii U and it's handheld cousin ceased production in 2014.

All eyes are now looking forwards. If Nintendo are going to halt production on their current generation console, this would seem to suggest that something new is on the way. There have been rumours that Nintendo's new NX would be announced soon with a launch window of late 2016 or early 2017.

I don't own a Wii U, although I was often swayed by the idea of playing Splatoon or even Zombi U, which eventually came to PC and somehow I still haven't played it.

Are you one of the few people with a Wii U? Will you miss it? Are you tempted to pick one up before it vanishes? Let ue know in the comments.
