Nintendo's digital distribution efforts are gathering momentum according to Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime.
Talking to Gamesindustry International, Fils-Aime stated that of the 15 Nintendo-published titles currently available as a physical and digital version on the 3DS, 11% of the sales have come from full digital downloads.
Fire Emblem Awakening on its own accounts for 80,000 digital sales, with that 80,000 being a third of the game's total sales to date.
The bulk of digital sales that Nintendo currently sees come from the Nintendo 3DS as opposed to the Wii or Wii U, with 67% of all of the handheld console owners having connected the device to the internet at some point. More than 41 million items from the company's eShop have been downloaded, including DLC, demos, free items and full games.
Although digital sales are growing in strength, Fils-Aime does also concede that with regards to the Wii U, 'the pace of launches has been slower than we hoped,' but teases that E3 will see that change.
Yesterday, Nintendo also announced a new entry to the Zelda series, a new Yoshi's Island game and another Mario Party title for the 3DS. The Zelda title will be set in the Link to the Past world which first featured in the SNES and will include a mechanic to allow Link to walk through walls.
In other SNES related news, Nintendo also announced that iconic JRPG Earthbound will be released on the Wii U virtual console in Europe later this year. The original version launched in 1994 and never received a European release.
