Nintendo has added a new Wii Channel to the official selection in Japan, adding the new features in as part of a new system update. Currently there's no news of when or if the new content will become available outside of Japan, but it looks very smart nonetheless.
The new channel, called the Wii Bonus Content channel appears as a prompt which asks console owners to key in a 16-digit code before they can progress. Codes are being distributed separately and seem to unlock all manner of new features for the hyperkinetic console.
One function that has been confirmed by gaming blog
Joystiq is the new Wii Speaker Channel which allows music from the DS game
Daigasso! Band Brothers to be streamed to the Wii. The key code for this new feature was distributed exclusively with the game in Japan.
What further use the Bonus Content Channel will have and how much support it will get from developers is still unclear, but hypothetically the system could be used to distribute anything - virtual console content, concept art, exclusive DS demos or simply more Wii Channels that tie in to relevant games.
Of course, this is all very well and good for the Japanese, but with no news of a European or American release the majority of us will have to be content as we are for now.
