After the success of the most recent
Tomb Raider game, it was only natural that a sequel would be made. Given how many Eidos games there are on Steam, it was only a matter of time before Gabe Newell's growing behemoth of online retail took on the title.
Titled
Tomb Raider: Anniversary, the new Lara Croft adventure will not be the much anticipated sequel that
Tomb Raider: Legend was leading up to, but rather it'll be a remake of the first and original
Tomb Raider title. You must remember that one, it was the only one without a suffix.
The new game, which will be using the same engine as
Tomb Raider: Legend and which will breathe new puzzles and action sequences into the original storyline and levels, will see a release via Steam on June 1st for most of the world, with America having to wait until June 5th to sample the game. Pre-purchases are available now at $29.95 for those with a Steam account already.
The move to Steam is seemingly becoming obligatory for some of the larger titles now which seek to take advantage of lower costs and the ability to make customers automatically update. Steam has been controversial with customers however, occasionally succumbing to power outages and failing under the huge demand for some games, like Valve's
Half-Life 2.
Activity on the forums here at
Bit-tech.net also shows that some gamers
prefer to wait for a boxed copy, even if there is a significant delay.
If
Legend is anything to go by then
Anniversary will definitely be worth a look, and gamers will hopefully be able to see a conclusion to the cliff-hanger ending of
Legend. This saw Lara battling against old friends in an attempt to uncover the mystery of her mother’s death, and hopefully we'll find out what happens next in a later instalment if
Anniversary proves as popular as previous titles.
Will you be grabbing Lara's latest instalment and will you prefer a boxed copy or a speedy, updating product? Hoping that renewed interest in the franchise won't subject us to another movie? Let us know in the
forums.
