Sony Online Entertainment President John Smedley thinks that as the PlayStation 3 moves forward that Massively Multiplayer Online games will play a major part in the success of the console, according to comments given in a recent interview.
Speaking to the
Seattle Times, Smedley outlined how PS3 exclusive MMOs like
The Agency will be of critical importance to the PlayStation 3 platform. He also indicated that it is by no means the only MMO the company is working on bringing to the PS3.
"
I think MMOs are going to be a real strong selling point for the PS3 long term - there's going to be some great ones on the PS3," Smedley said.
"
You're not going to find The Agency on the 360," he added wryly.
Microsoft meanwhile seems to have abandoned any efforts to bring MMOs to the Xbox 360, despite having a focus on online activities and making Xbox Live the centre point of the console. Both
Final Fantasy Live Online and
Marvel Universe Online were planned for the Xbox 360, but are no longer in development. Microsoft also looked at bringing a
Home-like service to Xbox Live but has apparently abandoned those plans too.
That said, it is heavily rumoured that Microsoft will be brining Funcom's
Age of Conan and Realtime World'
APB MMOs to the Xbox 360.
