Following on from trademark shenanigans and a fake countdown trailer, leaked documents from Bethesda have confirmed that Fallout 4 is in development.
The leaked documents, acquired by
Kotaku, consist of several documents from a casting call for the project, which although does not include the word Fallout does include several references to the game's world, including the famous line 'War. War never changes' which has started the first three Fallout games.
The leak suggests that the game will be set in Boston, Massachusetts. This ties in with a rumour that went around last year that Bethesda employees had been in the Massachusetts area scouting out M.I.T for use in a new Fallout game.
Further tying things together, the leaked casting call documents refer to the project as 'The Institute', which is possibly a reference to M.I.T.
The possibility of a new Fallout game popped up in the gaming press last month when a trademark for Fallout 4 was spotted in Europe, but this was uncovered as a hoax, much like the fake Half Life 3 trademark debunked earlier this year.
The hope from the faked trademark was however followed by an elaborate countdown timer and hoaxed alternate reality game on the site TheSurvivor2299.
The first Fallout game was released in 1997, although many fans of the series joined it with Fallout 3 in 2008 once Bethesda had bought the rights from Interplay, owners of the series' initial developer Black Isle Studios.
Interplay initially retained the rights to a Fallout MMO which bubbled away for several years but eventually wound up cancelled and the rights to the Fallout MMO was sold to Bethesda in an out of court settlement for $2m.
