Blizzard has banned thousands of Hearthstone accounts that have been found to be cheating in the free-to-play digital collectible Warcraft-themed card game.

The offending accounts were found to be associated with third-party programs that automate gameplay, in other words bots. The affected users have been suspended until 2015 but Blizzard has stated that any accounts found cheating in the future will be permanently removed.

’As we’ve stated, fair play is at the core of the Hearthstone experience, and cheating and botting will not be tolerated,’ said a Blizzard spokesperson. The Heartstone team mentioned that it was looking into the bot problem the game was facing back in August.

’We’re committed to creating a fun and rewarding environment for our players, and we will continue to closely monitor activities within Hearthstone and take appropriate action against cheating in any form,’ added Blizzard.

Blizzard also encourage any players to inform the team of any botting or other exploits that are against the Terms of Use by emailing hacks@blizzard.com.

Hearthstone launched earlier in 2014 and has since become a fan favourite, clocking up more than 20 million users. It also features regularly in the eSports scene and has generated revenues of approximately $110m.
