Digital man Andy Serkis has just launched a new initiative called Game Eden which is aimed at encouraging and promoting the growth of game developers based in the UK.
According to Gamasutra, Serkis will act as the groups leader of sorts and is starting off the idea in the east of England, but hopes to expand it soon. Serkis, who played Gollum in the Lord of the Rings movies and also had a role in Heavenly Sword, hopes to use the initiative to grow the game development industry in the UK.
Game Eden will use a website alongside various networking events (read: parties) to get locally based developers in touch with each other.
The whole idea is being financed by the East of England Development Agency (EEDA), East of England International (EEI), Screen East and FDMX. The project will then be lead by a committee of representatives from the likes of Sony, Zoonami and Ninja Theory who will direct the operations of Game Eden.
The launch of Game Eden comes at a time when many UK-based developers are complaining about the lack of government support when compared to other artistic media, such as film. The UK has also fallen on the games development rankings this year, evidencing the declining state of UK developers.
