In an attempt to squeeze every last morsel of life from the Playstation 2 brand, Sony has announced another price drop to its console, along with a pink make over.
SCEE is set to drop the price of its flagship product at this weeks Leipzig festival, in preparation for the lucrative Christmas market, and will now charge £94.99. It is the first time the slim-line console has dropped below the £100 mark, and is almost certainly an effort to guzzump the upcoming release of the Wii.
Along with the new attractive price the company is set to launch titles aimed at the casual gamer including, Sing Star, Buzz and a new Eye Toy,. All are set for release over the next few months.
SCEE President David Reeves had this to say:
"With this attractive new price point and a vast portfolio of over 2,200 software titles, we believe there has never been a better time to join the community of PlayStation 2 users. At this new price point, the market leading PS2 should remain the computer entertainment system of choice for an even wider and more diverse audience.”
In another publicity stunt Sony announced their new pink Playstation, which really is
very pink. The gimmick is going to be limited edition, and will cost £129.99, coming bundled with Singstar Pop - another attempt at getting non-gamers more involved. Mary Tristam, the UK brand manager for Playstation 2, was in a jubilant mood:
“The Pink PlayStation 2 is funky, fresh, and fashionable, and will further broaden the console’s continuing popularity and relevance with a fun new twist.”
The new price point, and Sony's targeting of the non-gamer demographic, could pose a serious problem to Nintendo who looked as though it would avoid the console war come Christmas. Meanwhile, Sony appear to be preparing to fight a war on all fronts, against the DS Lite, the Wii and the 360. Surely they won't win on every platform? Only time will tell.
Let us know what you make of Sony's strategy
over in the forums. Will you be buying a pink Playstation?
