The University of Kent is set to trial the UK's first wireless broadband internet service that could deliver the UK's fastest broadband solution to Canterbury. The company behind the trial, Telabria, is looking to research and develop WiMAX wireless networks with the help of the University's top networking brains.
Next month, Telabira will start installing base stations around the campus ahead of the three month trial. Along with Telabria getting access to the University's top networking experts, the undergraduate and postgraduate students studying subjects like computer science or networking will be provided with the opportunity of training and real-world work experience in the telecommunications industry.
"Together we can explore the impact that WiMAX will have on broadband communication for business, in areas such as remote training, VoIP (voice-over-IP) and video conferencing," stated Jim Baker, Telabria chief executive.
If the trial is a success, Baker reckons that the company will be able to lift the curtains on a commercial WiMAX broadband internet service around October. We hope the trial goes well, and that we can see the expansion of a wireless broadband internet service across the UK in the next 12-18 months.
