Microsoft's Windows OneCare Live service incorrectly identified Google Mail as spyware over the weekend.
Although slightly amusing, the problem meant that thousands of users were given false positive alerts about the reliability of Gmail, following tweaks that Google had made to its system.
According to
Silicon, a Microsoft representative said on Monday:
"This was a limited false positive issue with our antivirus protection. After we became aware of the issue, we released a new antivirus signature that resolved the issue for our customers on Sunday evening."
Microsoft has a history of suggesting that competitors are dangerous.
We previously reported that IE7 prevented downloading of FireFox on the basis that the executable file could be dangerous to consumers.
Bug, coincidence or something more malicious? We rather suspect the former, but do let us know what you think
over in the forums.
