Everyone and their dog (or polar bear) is watching the Lost television series at the moment, so it makes perfect marketing sense to capitalise on the shows success to release a series of tied in games. Ubisoft are the lucky guys to have got the rights and have announced they will be releasing games for all platforms sometime next year.

The mysterious TV series which has recently become available to download legally online is watched by millions in practically every country in the world. It will be interesting to see what format Ubisoft take in their adaptation of the show. Whether they will be allowed to create new storylines or will simply have to rehash the existing story remains to be seen.

Either way Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot is particularly excited about this money-spinner:

“We are delighted to work with Bryan Burk, one of the biggest producers in Hollywood and with Touchstone Television. That they have chosen us for the adaptation of the cult series ‘Lost’ is the best homage that a producer can make to the creativity of Ubisoft.”

In the back slapping joviality of press releases everywhere, three of those working closely on the television series commented on how excited they were about the game:

“This deal is another example of how truly powerful the ‘Lost’ brand is,” said Bruce Gersh, senior vice president, business development, ABC Entertainment and Touchstone Television. “We are excited to work together with Ubisoft to create a gaming experience that will allow fans to further immerse themselves into the mysteries and intrigues of the series.”

“The creative appeal of ‘Lost’ transcends borders with its character driven stories and addictive mysterious mythology,” said Julia Franz, executive vice president, Touchstone Television. “It's not enough for fans worldwide to just watch 'Lost,' the game is a wonderful opportunity to organically extend this creative phenomenon into an interactive consumer experience.”

"Many of us on ‘Lost’ have been hardcore gamers for years and the chance to work with Ubisoft, a company behind some of our favourite titles, has excited us to no end," said ‘Lost’ producer Bryan Burk. "With the ability to tell new interactive stories within the ‘Lost’ universe, we’re giddy to be developing a game that, once completed, will be as engaging and fun to play as it is to create."

After the modest success of ‘24 – The Game’ and the impending release of a Stargate game, it will be intriguing to see how well the television series format can be translated into future games. Don’t be too surprised to see similar press releases in the upcoming future concerning the other big television shows making waves at the moment such as Prison Break, Battlestar Galactica might all be in the pipeline for future creation. Lost's sister show Desperate Housewives is already in game production.
