Channel 4 will be broadcast on the net at the same time as over the airwaves, it has been announced today. The service will be free.
Viewers in the UK will be able to stream the channel's programming via
the website. The service launches June 27.
Unfortunately, 'bought-in' programmes, such as
Lost and
Desperate Housewives, won't be included in the deal. Viewers will have to stick to torrents, sorry, DVDs for those. However, Channel 4 hopes to negotiate the rights to these in the future, although it does currently sell downloads of Lost for 99p in WMV10 format.
There's also no news on whether 4 has plans to stream its other channels, E4 and More4.
4's original shows include hits like reality show Big Brother, political comedy Bremner, Bird and Fortune and teen/twentysomething showcase T4.
Channel 4 is the first broadcaster to stream online simultaneously, although the BBC does make some of its programmes available to watch after they have been aired.
We have to say that this is pretty neat. It's certainly good to see TV channels embracing the web rather than trying to keep content off it.
Will you watch more of Channel 4 now you don't have to leave your web browser to do so?
