Who said Kickstarter was dead?
Shenmue 3 has wrapped up a mammoth month of funding with $6,333,295 in cash. This makes it the most popular video game Kickstarter of all time, with nearly 70'000 of you choosing to give them your money.
It's also the sixth most popular Kickstarter of all time, beating out the Veronica Mars movie, but not quite as popular as the beautiful, affordable Ouya. It hit the original $2,000,000 asking price within just a few hours, making it the fastest Kickstarter to hit its funding goal, too.
It's not clear if Sony will offer any additional funding or what role they'll play in the finished project.
I've previously described the Shenmue 3 Kickstarter as "
Weaponised Nostalgia" but I'm interested to see what comes of the project. It slowed down significantly after it was funded and there was plenty of backlash in various parts of the internet, but at this stage Shenmue 3 is happening. Start making your peace with the idea.
There is talk of a continued crowndfunding effort through Paypal, which after the recent Star Citizen woes could get people a bit antsy, but we'll have to see what happens as the game moves towards completion. The original Shenmue was the most expensive video game ever developed at the time of its release, so a bit more change in the kitty probably won't hurt.
The Shenmue 3 trailer can be found
here if you're that way inclined. Expect a December 2017 release date.
